He seems the kind of writer whose early minor works are well worth reading not only for the light they cast on his later works but for their own merits as well. I loved how he challenged the conventions of how stories are told at such an early age.Risehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17446964640160585194noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3769714277850142841.post-88769192055335019042012-02-07T10:07:51.398+08:002012-02-07T10:07:51.398+08:00Rise, this review encouraged me to take up a diffe...Rise, this review encouraged me to take up a different Marías novel this month (am torn between reading all the back catalogue now and saving some books for later). Thanks! Naturally, I loved coming across Marías' point of view about the conclusion vs. the journey in the novel. Very thought-provoking of him as always.Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01746599416342846897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3769714277850142841.post-3368817021276541502012-02-06T19:47:54.654+08:002012-02-06T19:47:54.654+08:00Thanks for that broad definition of adventure, Séa...Thanks for that broad definition of adventure, Séamus! The books he mentioned in the interview were Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Almayer's Folly, and Conan Doyle via Billy Wilder of the movie The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes--maybe you've watched it? James's stories supposedly influenced the style and atmosphere, and the use of indirect narration.<Risehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17446964640160585194noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3769714277850142841.post-38494854693838847882012-02-06T10:53:45.944+08:002012-02-06T10:53:45.944+08:00You're making this book sound far more interes...You're making this book sound far more interesting than I would have guessed.
